How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session | Davison, Michigan Senior Photographer
Senior year is such an exciting milestone. Between finishing high school, planning for the future, and celebrating everything you’ve accomplished, senior photos become a really special way to capture who you are during this moment in your life.
If you’ve already booked your session with Photography by Tiffany — I’m so excited to work with you! This guide will help you feel completely prepared and confident for your senior portraits.
And if you’re still considering booking, this post will give you a peek into what the experience is like and how we make it fun, relaxed, and totally personalized.
What Your Senior Session Will Be Like
My senior sessions typically last about 60–90 minutes, which gives us plenty of time to explore locations, change outfits if your package allows, and create a variety of images.
But more importantly, this session is about you.
Whether you want classic portraits for your parents, something creative that reflects your hobbies, or a little bit of both — we’ll design the session around what feels most authentic to you.
I’ve had seniors:
Stage a horror movie scene
Create a comic book theme
Climb onto a giant cheese statue while playing guitar
The goal is simple: create photos that actually feel like you.
The Best Time for Senior Photos
Most of my sessions take place during golden hour, which is the hour before sunset.
Why?
Because the light is soft, warm, and flattering. It gives your photos that dreamy glow and helps create images that feel natural and timeless.
This light also allows us to move around different locations easily and create a variety of looks during your session.
What to Wear for Your Senior Photos
Your outfit choices can really shape the feel of your photos. I usually recommend bringing a mix of looks depending on your package.
Here’s a simple approach that works well:
1. Something casual
Your everyday style. Jeans, a favorite shirt, sneakers — something that feels like you.
2. Something dressy
This is often the “mom’s favorite” look. Think dresses, button-ups, or something slightly elevated.
3. Something that represents your interests
Sports uniforms, instruments, letterman jackets, hobby gear, etc.
For clients with the Heirloom Package, outfit changes are unlimited.
For Signature Sessions, you can bring up to three outfits.
For Essential Sessions, one outfit keeps things simple and focused.
The most important thing? Wear something that makes you feel confident.
Can You Bring Props?
Absolutely!
Props can add personality and tell your story. Some great examples include:
Sports equipment
Musical instruments
Letterman jackets
Cars or trucks
Pets
Hobby items
But props are never required. If you’d rather keep things simple, that works beautifully too.
Can Parents Come to the Session?
Yes — parents are always welcome!
Many parents like to come along, especially since these photos mark such a big milestone. Some even like to hop in for a quick photo at the end, which I’m always happy to do.
What If You're Nervous in Front of the Camera?
This is the number one thing seniors worry about — and I promise you’re not alone.
Most people show up to their session saying something like:
"I’m really awkward in photos."
Here’s the truth: my job is to help you relax and have fun.
We’ll talk, walk around, laugh, and try different ideas. I’ll guide you through poses that feel natural and comfortable so you’re never wondering what to do.
Some of the best photos happen once you start loosening up and just being yourself.
After Your Session
After your session, I carefully edit the best images from our time together.
Your package includes digital images, and you’ll also have the option to purchase professional prints and products if you’d like something tangible to display or gift to family members.
