How to Prepare for Your Davison, MI Studio Newborn Session
There is truly nothing sweeter than those first days with your baby.
The tiny fingers. The flaky skin. The way they curl perfectly into you.
As a Davison, MI newborn photographer, I believe these early days deserve to be preserved gently, calmly, and intentionally.
If you're wondering how to prepare or what to expect from your studio newborn photography session, I want you to feel completely at ease.
I’ve got you.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
The ideal time for a newborn session is when your baby is 5–14 days old.
During this window, babies are typically sleepier and curl naturally into those womb-like poses. This allows me to capture those dreamy, peaceful images while keeping baby comfortable at all times.
If we miss that window? Don’t stress. Beautiful images are always possible. But if you’re planning ahead, I recommend booking during your second trimester to ensure availability.
(Newborn spots are limited each month.)
A Baby-Led Experience
Your session will be completely baby-led.
That means:
We pause for feedings
We stop for diaper changes
We rock and soothe
We follow your baby’s cues
There is no rushing here.
As a Davison newborn photographer, my priority is your baby’s comfort. When baby is calm and content, the experience feels peaceful, and the images reflect that.
Plan for your session to last a few hours. We build in time so there is never pressure.
What I Provide
You do not need to worry about bringing outfits or props.
I provide:
Wraps
Headbands and hats
Coordinated props
3–4 custom-designed sets
Before your session, we’ll chat about colors and overall style. Soft neutrals? Earthy tones? Creamy and classic? We will design your session together so it feels aligned with your home and your heart.
If you have sentimental items (a blanket from grandma, a meaningful heirloom) I am always happy to incorporate those into your newborn photography session.
How to Prepare Baby for the Session
A few simple tips make a big difference:
1. Keep baby awake before the session (if possible).
A little interaction beforehand helps baby sleep more deeply during posing.
2. Feed baby upon arrival.
A full belly = a sleepy, content baby.
3. Bring a pacifier.
Even if your baby doesn’t normally take one, it can help briefly during transitions between poses.
Don’t worry if things don’t go perfectly. Babies are babies. I’ve photographed dozens of newborns across Davison, Detroit, and surrounding Michigan communities, and we always make it work.
Including Siblings or Family Photos
If siblings or family portraits are part of your session, we will do those first.
Little ones (and dads 😉) don’t always love sitting for long sessions, and that’s completely okay.
After we capture your connected family images, dad is welcome to take older kiddos home or out for a treat while we continue with baby.
Newborn sessions can be long, and I want everyone to have the best experience possible.
The Most Important Thing
Your only job?
Show up. Love your baby. Breathe.
These early days are tender. You may feel exhausted. Emotional. Overwhelmed in the most beautiful way.
My role as your Davison, MI newborn photographer is to create a calm, supportive space where you feel cared for, and to document this season exactly as it is.
Because one day, those tiny fingers won’t be tiny anymore.
And you will be so grateful you paused to remember. 💗
